On May 3rd 2011, the “Netherlands-Korea 50 Years Anniversary in Diplomatic Relations Seminar” was held in the New Millennium Hall Room #101. At the Seminar, the Netherlands and Korea celebrated 50 years of cooperation in the economic, cultural, and educational fields.At the seminar, H.E. Paul Menkveld, Ambassador, The Kingdom of the Netherlands to the Republic of Korea, Harry van Woerden, Executive Director, Netherlands Foreign Investment Agency, Eun-mi Postma, Director, Nuffic Neso Korea, and Jeroen Plag, ING Country Manager Korea each delivered a presentation on their respective subjects.
The seminar began with the opening remarks of the Yonsei-SERI EU Centre’s director, Dr. Young-Ryeol Park, who began with celebrating the past 50 years of friendly relations and exchanges between the two nations. He went on to highlight the deep commercial connections between the Netherlands and Korea, and wished that this relationship continue for another 50 years.
At the seminar, his Excellency Mr. Menkveld presented onthe 50 years of diplomatic ties between the Netherlands and Korea He described the historical background of the first Dutch-Korean Bilateral relations. He then went on to narrate the history of diplomatic ties and bilateral exchanges between the two, which include the sending of Korean special envoys to the Hague, and the Dutch participation during the Korean war. Mr. Harry van Woerden gave a detailed presentation on the Netherlands and the business opportunities and they offer. Netherlands is strategically located, with over 170 million people living within a 500 kilometer radius. It offers a prime approach to the European market. The Netherlands also boasts a highly developed infrastructure and logistics network. The Dutch port of Rotterdam is the largest in Europe in terms of tonnage processed, and the nearby airport of Amsterdam is the busiest airport hub in Europe. The Netherlands also offers favorable tax policies and living conditions for foreign companies, making it an ideal place for establishing a firm’s European headquarters.
Ms. Eun-mi Postma presented on higher education in the Netherlands and opportunities for Korean students to study abroad there. The Nuffic Neso supports foreign students in the Netherlands by connecting them with universities, verifying their previous degrees, providing them with general information and scholarship opportunities.
Mr. Jeroen Plag presented on the ING bank, a transnational financial and insurance organization with Dutch origins. The bank currently maintains an office in Korea, dealing mainly with providing services for major Korean exporting firms. The bank also finances and manages large investment projects overseas, bringing together capital and expertise to create profitable projects.
