The 16th Brussels Forum was held on November 23rd, 2013, at Yonsei University Underwood Hall #701. At the Forum, Professor Jean-Francois Hennart from Tilburg University presented on the topic of “The internationalization of Italian family firms”.
The forum examined the question of whether family firms are more internationally involved than non-family firms in the case of Italy. Theory on the matter was divided, with some suggesting less internationalization due to managerial positions occupied by family members lacking international management skills, among others, while others suggesting more internationalization due to longer term perspectives in family owned firms promoting investment abroad. A final gravity model was developed to better measure the level of internationalization, the dynamics of which, were explained by Professor Hennart.
The discussion that follows the presentation involved discourse over whether the international operations of family ownership and control favor internationalization, and whether if that effect is fully dependent on family involvement in management. A similar study on wider pan-European sample was proposed as well.
